SmartPHX is the first app of its kind for Downtown Phoenix: a concierge-style app designed to help you discover all there is to do and see in the urban heart of the country’s sixth-largest city. SmartPHX knows where you are and helps you find nearby restaurants, shopping, night life, culture and sporting events.
The mobile Web application was developed in 2011-2012 by the New Media Innovation Lab at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University for our client Red Development, the team behind CityScape in Downtown Phoenix.
Student content developers were Tara Burns, Sara Whitmire, Andrew Gallo and Spring Eselgroth. Conrad Ottey, a mass communication graduate student, served as project manager.
NMIL lead developer Mark Ng along with computer science Ph.D. candidate Sumit Shrivvastava and Cronkite graduate student Heather Billings programmed the app. The SmartPHX design was created by graphic design major Vincent Salgado. Cronkite Washington Bureau Chief Steve Crane edited the copy.
